Frequently Asked Questions

How do I register to become a volunteer?

Head here to input your basic information and then check your inbox for our email verification.  Follow the link in that email and finish by entering a few last details.

How do I sign up for an opportunity?

Once you have an account, head to our calendar or opportunity search pages.  Select the opportunity and date/time you'd like, then click the light blue "Sign Up" button in the bottom left corner.  Then keep your eyes peeled for a confirmation email with all the information you'll need.

The volunteering event is full, can I still come?

All volunteers must register ahead of time; we do not accept any walk-ins. If your desired opportunity is full, you can add yourself to the waitlist and a member of our team will contact you if a spot opens up.

Where can I verify my volunteer hours?

You can find your accumulated hours on your volunteer portal. To access your volunteer portal, go to My Account.

How far in advance should I sign-up?

Once the event is posted on our volunteer site, sign-ups operate on a first-come, first-serve basis. If the event you would like to sign up for is full, you can add yourself to the waitlist and a member of our team will contact you if a spot opens up.

Can I complete court-assigned service hours at your facility?

No, we do not accept court-ordered volunteers.

What should I wear/bring to my volunteer event?

We recommend wearing comfortable, casual clothing such as jeans, a t-shirt, and tennis shoes.

Please try to limit the number of personal items you bring, as we will not have a place to stow your backpack or purse.  We are not responsible for anything that goes missing.

Can I bring proof of a negative COVID-19 test in place of proof of vaccination?

No. For everyone's safety, we require all volunteers and staff to be vaccinated. Proof of vaccination will be verified.

You do not need to show proof of vaccination for virtual events.

If you have a volunteer event coming up and are experiencing COVID-like symptoms, please email us at volunteer@lafh.org and let us know you cannot attend.

Do you offer any virtual volunteer opportunities?

Yes! Please visit our Volunteer Calendar to learn more.

Do you offer any youth volunteer opportunities for those 18 and under?

Yes! Please visit our Youth page for more information.

Can I help out a participant I met with a ride or an item they need?

We are grateful that you want to help, but we ask that you do not give directly to them.  If you feel inclined to assist in a larger way, we ask you to donate through our agency so that we can put your gift to the best use possible.

Can I stay in touch with a participant I met?

As a volunteer, you are an extension of LA Family Housing.  Therefore we ask you to maintain professional boundaries and refrain from sharing your last name, social handles, email, or phone number.

Can I share my faith with participants through prayer or by distributing religious information?

To respect the thousands of people we serve with various religious backgrounds and to maintain our 501(c)3 status, proselytizing is not allowed.

Can I post photos or videos of me volunteering?

At events where participants are present, photography is prohibited in order to respect their privacy (and sometimes safety.)  The Volunteer Coordinator at your event will take plenty of photos of just the volunteers and will email them to you afterward.

At events where no participants are present, please take all the photos you like!  Please be sure to tag us at @LAFamilyHousing.

I have additional questions that are not answered here. Who should I contact?

Please contact our volunteer department at volunteer@lafh.org.
